# Capacitor Tauri Platform: Lean Desktop Apps[¶](#capacitor-tauri-platform-lean-desktop-apps "Permanent link")

Yesterday we announced the Capacitor Electron Platform. Today we're introducing its sibling: the [Capacitor Tauri Platform](/docs/sdks/capacitor/tauri/), a free and open-source platform that brings your Capacitor app to macOS, Windows, and Linux with [Tauri](https://v2.tauri.app/). Instead of bundling a browser, it uses the system webview and a security-first Rust core, so your desktop app installs in a few megabytes. It's MIT-licensed and contributions are welcome!

## Why Another Desktop Platform?[¶](#why-another-desktop-platform "Permanent link")

Not every desktop app needs a bundled browser. An Electron app ships its own Chromium and Node.js, which buys you the full Capacitor plugin ecosystem at the cost of an installer around 80 to 150 MB. Many developers prefer Tauri for exactly this reason: it renders your app in the webview the operating system already provides (WKWebView on macOS, WebView2 on Windows, WebKitGTK on Linux) and runs its core logic in Rust.

Until now, there was no maintained way to target Tauri from a Capacitor project. The Capacitor Tauri Platform closes that gap while keeping the workflow you already use for Android and iOS.

## What Is the Capacitor Tauri Platform?[¶](#what-is-the-capacitor-tauri-platform "Permanent link")

The Capacitor Tauri Platform is an npm package (`@capawesome/capacitor-tauri`) that adds Tauri as a desktop target to your Capacitor project. It requires Capacitor 8 or later and Tauri 2 or later, and always supports the latest versions of both. Highlights include:

* **Tiny binaries**: System-webview apps are a few megabytes instead of the \~100 MB an embedded browser needs.
* **Security-first**: A Rust core with deny-by-default permissions; capability files are generated with the minimum grants your plugins need.
* **Familiar workflow**: `cap add`, `cap sync`, and `cap run`, the same commands as on mobile.
* **Curated plugins**: Ready-made implementations of core Capacitor plugins on top of official `tauri-plugin-*` crates.
* **Web fallback**: Any Capacitor plugin with a web implementation works automatically.
* **Deep links and app lifecycle**: Custom URL schemes and `appStateChange`, `pause`, and `resume` events via the official [@capacitor/app](https://capacitorjs.com/docs/apis/app) plugin.
* **Live reload**: Develop against your web dev server with full hot module replacement.
* **Minimal scaffold**: You own a thin `src-tauri/` folder; all runtime logic ships in the platform crate and updates via `cargo update`.

Tauri requires the Rust toolchain and your platform's system dependencies, so complete the [Tauri prerequisites guide](https://v2.tauri.app/start/prerequisites/) first. After that, adding the desktop target takes two commands:

This scaffolds a thin `src-tauri/` project containing only files you own: a three-line `main.rs`, the `tauri.conf.json` configuration, generated capability files, `Cargo.toml`, and your app icons. From there, the workflow matches mobile:

Note that you always pass the full package name to the Capacitor CLI; a bare `npx cap sync tauri` does nothing. For live reload with full HMR, set `server.url` in your Capacitor configuration to your dev server, just like on mobile. ## How Do Capacitor Plugins Work on Tauri?[¶](#how-do-capacitor-plugins-work-on-tauri "Permanent link")

Tauri has no Node.js runtime, so the plugin story works in three tiers. The [@capacitor/app](https://capacitorjs.com/docs/apis/app) plugin is built into the platform itself. A curated set of core plugins ([@capacitor/filesystem](https://capacitorjs.com/docs/apis/filesystem), [@capacitor/preferences](https://capacitorjs.com/docs/apis/preferences), [@capacitor/dialog](https://capacitorjs.com/docs/apis/dialog), and [@capacitor/local-notifications](https://capacitorjs.com/docs/apis/local-notifications)) is implemented on top of the official `tauri-plugin-*` crates. And any Capacitor plugin with a web implementation works automatically via fallback.

At sync time, the platform scans your plugin dependencies, generates a deny-by-default capability file with only the permissions the enabled curated plugins need, and wires the matching crates into your project. Your app code stays unchanged. Deep links, for example, use the same listener as on Android and iOS:

## Packaging for macOS, Windows, and Linux[¶](#packaging-for-macos-windows-and-linux "Permanent link")

Packaging uses Tauri's own bundler. Sync first, then build from your project root:

This produces native installers for the current operating system (`.dmg`/`.app`, `.msi`/`.exe`, `.deb`/`.AppImage`). Code signing, the updater, and target configuration live in `src-tauri/tauri.conf.json`; see the [Tauri distribution guide](https://v2.tauri.app/distribute/) for details.

## Electron or Tauri: Which Should You Choose?[¶](#electron-or-tauri-which-should-you-choose "Permanent link")

The Capacitor Tauri Platform is a complement to the [Capacitor Electron Platform](/blog/announcing-the-capacitor-electron-platform/) we announced yesterday. Pick based on your priorities:

In short: choose Tauri for lean, security-sensitive, kiosk-style, and consumer apps. Choose Electron for plugin-heavy apps and for apps that rely on Live Updates.

## What Are the Limitations?[¶](#what-are-the-limitations "Permanent link")

We'd rather you know the trade-offs up front. These are inherent to Tauri's architecture:

* **No plugin-ecosystem reuse**: Tauri's core is Rust and there is no Node.js runtime, so arbitrary Capacitor native plugins don't run. Only the built-in plugin, the curated set, web implementations, and bespoke Rust implementations work. This is the main reason to choose the Electron platform instead.
* **Three webview engines**: WKWebView, WebView2, and WebKitGTK behave differently, which creates a real cross-engine testing burden, worst on Linux. Electron's single bundled Chromium is more predictable.
* **No web-bundle over-the-air updates**: Web assets are compiled into the binary. Only full signed binary updates via `tauri-plugin-updater` are possible.
* **Rust toolchain required**: Developers and CI need Rust and platform system dependencies installed, with longer first builds and large `target/` directories.

Plugins work if they are built into the platform, part of the curated set, or ship a web implementation. Arbitrary native plugins don't run because Tauri has no Node.js runtime. Not for web bundles. Tauri compiles the web assets into the binary, so only full signed binary updates are supported. If Live Updates are a requirement, choose the Capacitor Electron Platform.

It returns `'tauri'`, and `Capacitor.isNativePlatform()` returns `true`.
