4.18.0 Release[¶](#capawesome-cli-4180-release "Permanent link") Version 4.18.0 of the [Capawesome CLI](/docs/cloud/cli/) is out. Eleven minor releases have shipped since the [4.7.0 release](/blog/capawesome-cli-4-7-0-release/) in April, and the theme running through all of them is coverage: things you could only do in the Cloud Console now have a command. Automations, native configurations and build sharing are all scriptable, failed builds can be explained by AI from your terminal, and a finished build can be installed on a local emulator or simulator with one command. Until now you configured them in the Console. Version 4.18.0 adds five commands that cover the full lifecycle, so an automation can be created as part of a setup script instead of clicked together by hand. Creating one takes a single call. This automation builds an iOS App Store release on every push to `main` and submits it to the destination you name: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:automations:create \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-3) --name "Release Builds" \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-4) --platform ios \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-5) --type app-store \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-6) --trigger-type branch \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-7) --trigger-pattern main \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-0-8) --destination "App Store" ` Set `--trigger-type tag` to build on tags instead, and narrow either trigger with `--trigger-pattern` — for example `v*` to react only to version tags. Branch triggers additionally accept `--commit-message-pattern`, which skips commits whose message doesn't match. Build settings you already use elsewhere carry over: `--certificate`, `--environment`, `--configuration`, `--stack` and, for web builds, `--channel`. The remaining commands round out the set: [apps:automations:list](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsautomationslist) and [apps:automations:get](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsautomationsget) inspect what exists, [apps:automations:update](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsautomationsupdate) changes a value (pass an empty string to clear one), and [apps:automations:delete](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsautomationsdelete) removes the automation together with the webhook it registered on your repository. See [Getting Started with Automations](/docs/cloud/automations/setup/) for the full walkthrough. ## Run a Build on an Emulator or Simulator[¶](#run-a-build-on-an-emulator-or-simulator "Permanent link") The new [apps:builds:run](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsbuildsrun) command takes a succeeded build, downloads the artifact, boots a local Android emulator or iOS simulator, and installs and launches the app. That replaces the download-unzip-drag routine you'd otherwise repeat every time you want to look at a cloud build on your machine: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-1-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:builds:run \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-1-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-1-3) --build-number 42 ` Without further options the CLI asks which target device to use and lists already-running devices first, so you can reuse a booted emulator instead of waiting for a cold start. To skip the prompt, name the device directly: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-2-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:builds:run \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-2-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-2-3) --build-number 42 \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-2-4) --target-name "iPhone 17 Pro" \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-2-5) --target-name-sdk-version 26.5 ` Two requirements are worth knowing up front. On Android you need the Android SDK with at least one AVD, and the build must be a debug or release build. On iOS you need macOS with Xcode, and only builds of type `simulator` work — development, ad hoc and App Store builds are signed for physical devices. The [Run on an Emulator or Simulator](/docs/cloud/native-builds/run-on-emulator-or-simulator/) guide covers both setups. ## Native Configurations[¶](#native-configurations "Permanent link") A [native configuration](/docs/cloud/native-builds/native-configurations/) is a named record that Capawesome Cloud applies to your native project right before a build starts. It sets the display name shown on the home screen and the package name (the application ID on Android, the bundle ID on iOS). One code base, several variants, no branch juggling. As of 4.18.0 you can manage these from the CLI: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-3-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:configurations:create \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-3-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-3-3) --name staging \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-3-4) --display-name "My App (Staging)" \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-3-5) --package-name com.example.app.staging ` Both fields are optional, and an empty field leaves the value in your project untouched. Once the configuration exists, select it per build with `--configuration`: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-4-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:builds:create \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-4-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-4-3) --platform android \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-4-4) --type release \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-4-5) --git-ref main \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-4-6) --configuration staging ` The same option works on `apps:automations:create`, so a staging automation and a production automation can build the same branch into two apps that install side by side. This is the standard setup for white-label apps and for development, staging and production variants. Note that native configurations apply to Android and iOS only — web builds ignore them. ## Share a Build with Testers[¶](#share-a-build-with-testers "Permanent link") Version 4.16.0 introduced [apps:builds:share](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsbuildsshare), which turns a succeeded build into a public link that testers can open without a Capawesome Cloud account. Add instructions and an expiry date so the link doesn't outlive the test round: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-5-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:builds:share \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-5-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-5-3) --build-number 42 \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-5-4) --description "Please test the new checkout flow" \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-5-5) --expires-in-days 7 ` If a build is meant for testers from the start, skip the second command and pass `--share` when you create it, optionally with `--share-description` and `--share-expires-in-days`: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-6-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:builds:create \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-6-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-6-3) --platform ios \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-6-4) --type ad-hoc \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-6-5) --git-ref main \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-6-6) --share ` With `--json`, the share commands return the `webUrl` and a `qrCodeUrl` pointing to a PNG of the share page's QR code — enough to post a link and a scannable code into Slack from a pipeline step. Version 4.17.0 added [apps:builds:unshare](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsbuildsunshare) to revoke a link immediately. Build logs are never exposed on a share page. See [Share a Build](/docs/cloud/native-builds/share-a-build/) for details. ## Why did my build fail?[¶](#why-did-my-build-fail "Permanent link") [Capawesome Cloud Assist](/blog/announcing-capawesome-cloud-assist/) reads the logs of a failed build and returns a diagnosis with a suggested fix. Since 4.12.0 you can ask for that summary without opening the Console: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-7-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:builds:failure-summary \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-7-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-7-3) --build-number 42 ` There is a matching [apps:deployments:failure-summary](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsdeploymentsfailure-summary) command for deployments. You can also request the summary upfront with `--failure-summary` on [apps:builds:create](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsbuildscreate) and [apps:deployments:create](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsdeploymentscreate): if the job fails, the explanation is printed right there in your terminal or CI log. The flag needs the command to wait for the result, so it can't be combined with `--detached`. Generating a summary can take up to a minute, which the CLI now tells you while it waits. ## Read Commands and JSON Output Everywhere[¶](#read-commands-and-json-output-everywhere "Permanent link") Version 4.9.0 filled in the missing read commands. Apps, builds, deployments and organizations all have `get` and `list` variants now, alongside the ones channels and certificates already had. Version 4.13.0 then extended `--json` to the commands that were still text-only, including `apps:liveupdates:upload` and the various `create` and `register` commands. Read-style commands print nothing but JSON, so they pipe straight into `jq`: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-8-1)npx @capawesome/cli apps:builds:list \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-8-2) --app-id your-app-id \ [](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-8-3) --json | jq -r '.[].id' ` A few payloads grew useful extras along the way. `apps:builds:get` and `apps:builds:list` include the related job with status, logs and timing, so a failed build can be diagnosed programmatically. Deployment output includes the app build data, and environment output includes variable and secret keys. The [Scripting](/docs/cloud/cli/scripting/) guide explains how to handle commands that stream progress before their JSON block, plus token authentication and non-interactive flags. ## Other Improvements[¶](#other-improvements "Permanent link") Smaller changes from 4.8.0 through 4.17.3: * **App creation**: [apps:create](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appscreate) gained `--link` to connect the local git repository right away, `--type` to create Cordova, Android or iOS apps instead of Capacitor ones, `--json` output, and it prints the app URL when it's done. * **ZIP sources**: `apps:builds:create --path` accepts a ZIP file, not just a directory. * **Platform inference**: single-platform apps derive the platform from the app type, so `--platform` becomes optional. * **Environments**: a new [apps:environments:get](/docs/cloud/cli/commands/#appsenvironmentsget) command, and `--name` on `set` and `unset` to target an environment without its ID. * **Cordova signing keys**: `apps:liveupdates:generatesigningkey` supports the Cordova app type. * **Bug fixes**: large bundles are hashed and signed in chunks to avoid `RangeError: data is too long`, ZIP entry attributes are cleared to prevent extraction errors on Android, native build artifact directories are excluded when zipping local sources, and unreadable or missing files now produce a clear error instead of a stack trace. ## Upgrading[¶](#upgrading "Permanent link") To upgrade to the latest version, run: `[](#%5F%5Fcodelineno-9-1)npm install -g @capawesome/cli@latest ` ## Try Capawesome Cloud[¶](#try-capawesome-cloud "Permanent link") If you haven't tried Capawesome Cloud yet, now is a good time. Nothing in that chain requires the Console anymore, which also makes it a workflow an AI agent can drive on your behalf.
